Deb Morrow, a Democratic candidate for
Congress, has denied she tweeted that South Carolina Congressman Trey
Gowdy is “the homo lover” of Senator Lindsey Graham.
Morrow, who is running against Gowdy, a
Republican, for the 4th U.S. Congressional seat, closed
her Morrow4Congress Twitter account after two messages concerning her
rival's sexual orientation were posted, Columbia alternative weekly
the Free
Times reported.
One tweet read “@TGowdySC is a Homo,”
while the second called Gowdy “the homo lover” of Graham, a
Republican, then added, “Just sayin'.”
A spokesman for Gowdy declined to
comment on the messages when asked by the Easley,
Patch.
Morrow told the Free Times that
she did not post the tweets, adding that only a handful of people had
access to the account, including a former staffer.
Morrow, who said campaign staffers
maintained the account, called the tweets silly: “We're Democrats.
I just wouldn't consider calling anybody a homosexual a bad thing.
It just wouldn't be something that we would say. We're all for human
rights and civil rights and everything.”
“I believe that the Twitter account
was hacked and the tweet was posted by no person that at any time had
anything to do with the campaign,” Morrow said. “We will not be
tweeting anymore.”
In 2010, Graham
denied rumors he's gay, telling The New York Times, “I
know it's really gonna upset a lot of gay men – I'm sure hundreds
of 'em are gonna be jumping off the Golden Gate bridge – but I
ain't available. I ain't gay. Sorry.”
Gowdy has previously compared gay
relationships to incest and polygamy.
