Chandler Massey, the 21-year-old actor who
plays Will Horton on the NBC soap Days of Our Lives, has
called his character's coming out gay storyline “realistic.”
Massey on Saturday won the Daytime Emmy
in the Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series category. It is
Massey's first Emmy and the first given to an actor playing a gay
character.
During a Q&A session with reporters
after his win, Massey was asked how he felt being part of the soap's
groundbreaking storyline.
“It's an honor,” Massey answered.
“It really is. It's an honor to be just a small, you know, splash
on the canvass. I'm honored to be part of the first gay storyline,
but I'm also honored to be part of this storyline because it was
written so well. Regardless of what the subject matter was about, I
think it was handled very realistically. And that's cool. It's cool
to be a part of a storyline that's topical. Where some storylines on
soaps stretch the bounds of reality, this one doesn't.” (The video
