Chandler Massey, the 21-year-old actor
who plays recently out Will Horton on the NBC soap Days of our
Lives, on Saturday won his first Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding
Younger Actor in a Drama Series category.
Massey's win is also the first Daytime
Emmy given to an actor playing a gay character.
“I wasn't nervous at all this morning
or anything,” he told gay male entertainment blog AfterElton.com,
“but when they started announcing the names in the category I got
really nervous.”
“I didn't hear the name that they
called, but all I heard was my dad go 'Yeah!' because my dad was
sitting right next to me, so that's how I knew. Then I went up and
flubbed the speech.”
“I definitely did not think it was
going to happen this year. Not at all,” he added.
Massey, whose character was also the
show's first to share an onscreen same sex kiss, previously told The
Huffington Post that he was thrilled
to play gay, calling the storyline “important and relevant
today.”
