Comedian Bill Maher has criticized Mitt
Romney's opposition to gay marriage and Newsweek's upcoming
cover featuring President Barack Obama.
Appearing on TBS' late night chat show
Conan, Maher, the host of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher,
told host Conan O'Brien that he thought it “ridic” that it took
so long for Obama to announce his personal support for marriage
equality and blasted an upcoming Newsweek cover celebrating
the president's move by featuring him with a gay halo and the
caption, “The First Gay President.”
“I don't understand how this
translates. What does he do that's gay?” Maher said.
When O'Brien noted that Newsweek
made him a “gay angel,” Maher joked: “Why not just short-shorts
and a penis popcicle in his hand?”
“It's also ridiculous because Mitt
Romney, I mean, here he is talking about how marriage goes back 3,000
years … It's not, that's one thing. And also of all the people to
be making this claim, that marriage is between one man and [one
woman]. A Mormon? Between one man, except for my grandfather who
went to Mexico specifically to get away from a country that said you
have to have a marriage that's only one … They went to Mexico the
Romneys,” (The video is embedded in the right panel of this page.
