Audra McDonald has recorded a video
praising President Barack Obama's support for gay marriage.
In the video released Monday by Freedom
to Marry, the 41-year-old McDonald, a four time Tony Award winner,
describes Obama as a “superhero.”
“I think it's a very exciting time
right now in the fight for marriage equality,” McDonald says.
“Especially because in recent days the president has come out in
support of marriage equality.”
“I thought very much, immediately
actually, about young people, especially in the state of North
Carolina and other states, how that ban must have made them feel. It
must have made them feel about themselves and how they are seen in
their community and maybe that they are seen as less than or there's
something wrong with them.”
“So now to have the president come
out and say, 'No, you're okay. I support you. I support your right
to be who you are and marry who you want to marry someday. And I'm
going to fight for that right.'”
“It's like a superhero just flew
into their corner,” she adds. (The video is embedded in the right
