Boy George has criticized Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard over her opposition to gay marriage, The Sunday Times reported.

Gillard successfully backed a motion to allow lawmakers to make a “conscience vote” on bills relating to gay marriage during the Australian Labor Party's (ALP) recent national conference, effectively diluting the party's recent vote in favor of marriage equality in its platform.

“I'm baffled by it,” Boy George said. “If they just let it happen they'd realize it's not the end of civilization as we know it.”

“On one hand they mention family values and the importance of relationships but if people want to get married isn't that a good thing?”

“It's so unimportant. I don't think it's the job of the PM or a politician to deal with that. Gay people have been around since the dinosaurs.”

The 50-year-old Boy George will be in Sydney on New Year's Eve to kick off the 30th anniversary Culture Club reunion tour.

“I just don't get homophobia,” he added. “And not allowing gay marriage is homophobia. What difference does it make to you? It's not a choice. 'Oh, I think I'll be gay.'”
