Ohio teen Levi Sever will serve 90 days
in a juvenile detention center for attacking schoolmate Zach Huston,
a 15-year-old gay student, the Columbus
Dispatch reported.
Sever, also 15, was sentenced Wednesday
by a juvenile court judge. He has also been ordered to undergo
mental health counseling.
Huston being beaten was caught
on video and posted on Facebook.
The video, captured by another student
with a cell phone, shows Sever waiting for his victim in a classroom
at Union-Scioto High School in Chillicothe, approximately an hour
south of Columbus.
School officials originally gave Sever
a three-day suspension.
Huston told WBNS that officials blamed
him for the attack.
“He basically said, 'There's a few
gay kids in school and you're the only one they have problems with.
So, what can you do to tone yourself down?'” he said.
The response angered Huston's mother,
Rebecca Collins, who contacted the Ohio Chapter of the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU) and threatened to file charges.
“It turns my stomach,” Collins told
Columbus-based Fox affiliate WTTE. “They did it just because he's
homosexual.”
