Conan O'Brien will officiate over the
wedding of a gay staffer on the Thursday episode of his late-night
talk show Conan on cabler TBS.
The 48-year-old O'Brien is taping his
show at New York's Beacon Theater to celebrate the show's one-year
anniversary.
O'Brien's former gig on NBC, Late
Night with Conan O'Brien, filmed in New York City for 16 years.
The late-night host will highlight how
things have changed in the Empire State during his absence by
marrying a longtime gay staffer and his partner.
New York became the sixth state to
legalize gay marriage in June and the law took effect the following
month. Governor Andrew Cuomo has been widely credited with getting
the legislation approved.
O'Brien was ordained through the
Universal Life Church on October 21 to perform the legal ceremony.
In a statement, the church said it “supports the rights of everyone
in America to be married in a meaningful way and enjoy the legal,
emotional and societal privileges that extend from matrimony.”
