Rebeca Arellano and her girlfriend
Haileigh Adams have been crowned homecoming king and queen at Patrick
Henry High School in San Diego, California.
ABC
News is reporting that Arellano was made the school's first
homecoming king during a pep rally held on Friday and Adams was made
queen at the school dance on Saturday. (Video of Adams' announcement
is embedded in the right panel of this page.)
“I was happier than when I won. My
little Haileigh has just been announced Homecoming queen and I
couldn't feel happier! Thanks to every single one of you! You guys
made this happen and we are all part of something huge. I can't
fully express how grateful I am. I am in completely [sic] shocked
that this happened. My girl looks absolutely flawless,” Arellano
wrote on Facebook.
“We have a lot of support,” Adams
told ABC News, “but there are also a lot people who are angry about
it. Anonymous Patrick Henry students are saying they're embarrassed
and that it's wrong for a girl to take the spot of king. But there's
no other way for us to run as a couple. It's not really fair for us
not to have the right to run as a couple.”
Both girls came out gay in their
freshman year. They've been dating for about 20 months.
Arellano called the experience
“amazing.”
