A David Weprin attack flyer claims his
vote as a New York Assemblyman in support of a gay marriage law mocks
the Torah.
The National Organization for Marriage
(NOM), the nation's most vociferous opponent of gay marriage, is
spending $75,000 against Weprin's campaign to replace former New York
Rep. Anthony D. Weiner, who resigned in June as a result of a sexting
scandal. NOM is backing Republican Bob Turner in Tuesday's special
election.
Last week, the group began distributing
an ad that attacks Weprin for betraying his faith.
Weprin “Defied Jewish law and
betrayed our values by voting to impose same-gender marriage in New
York. Now he wants to be our representative in Congress,” the
flyer states.
The ad goes on to quote Weprin saying:
“I'm an observant Jew myself. … I had an orthodox Jewish ceremony
but I don't think the state should be dictating what kind of
religious ceremony that should be sanctioned by the state.”
Here is the full statement Weprin made
in July: “I did vote for marriage equality, civil marriage, I
thought that it was the right thing to do. I look at it as a civil
rights issue. I've said this on the floor, I am an observant Jew
myself. My children were married – I have two married children. I
have a granddaughter, a two week old granddaughter [press offers
congratulations]. They had Orthodox Jewish ceremonies, I had an
Orthodox Jewish ceremony. But I don't think that the state should be
dictating what kind of religious ceremony that should be sanctioned
by the state. We're talking about civil marriage and along with that
marriage brings about 1,300 additional rights that civil unions do
not. So, I thought it was the right thing to do.”
The mailer adds: “Do not let David
Weprin mock our Torah!”
