A majority of people attending the
Minnesota State Fair say they oppose a proposed constitutional
amendment that would define marriage as a heterosexual union, the
Minnesota
Independent
reported.
The annual poll conducted by the
Republican-led Minnesota House of Representatives found 66.5 percent
of fair-goers oppose the amendment, while 29.8 percent favor it.
The “informal, unscientific survey of
issues discussed in the prior sessions” asked: “Should the state
constitution be amended to define marriage as only a union of one man
and one woman? This question will be on the November 2012 ballot.”
A record 12,549 people participated in
the survey during the fair's 12-day run, which ended on Labor Day.
Opponents and proponents of the measure
encouraged supporters to participate in the poll. Minnesota for
Marriage, which supports defining marriage as a heterosexual union in
the Minnesota Constitution, and Minnesotans United for All Families,
which opposes the amendment, alerted supporters of the survey via
email and at various booths throughout the fairgrounds.
