Conservative celebrity Ann Coulter is
okay with New York legalizing gay marriage, if the move shuts people
up about the topic of gay rights.
The 49-year-old Coulter has previously
walked a fine line on gay rights, appearing at events alongside gay
GOP group GOProud, but also opposing gay marriage and repeal of
“Don't Ask, Don't Tell.”
Marriage “is not a civil right –
you're not black,” she told members of GOProud last year.
Coulter appeared Wednesday on cabler
HLN's The Joy Behar Show
to promote her newest book.
“The only reason I might be happy is
maybe they will shut up about it,” she told host Joy Behar with a
chortle. “OK, the media capital of the world has gay marriage, can
we move on now?”
“I not only want 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' for
the military, I want 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' for all of society.
Just give me a week where we're not talking about gays.”
Despite her own gag order, Coulter went
on to suggest gay troops were unfit to serve.
Her comment, “I not only don't want
open gays in the military, I don't want open girls in the military,”
prompted Behar to ask who should be serving openly.
“Heterosexual men,” Coulter
answered. “The same sort of men who can be firemen.”
