Santana on the Fox musical-comedy Glee, singer Pink and
actress Christina Applegate cheered passage of a gay marriage bill in
New York.
The
New York Senate late Friday night approved the marriage legislation
championed by Governor Andrew Cuomo with the help of four Republicans
who joined all but one Democrat in voting for the measure. The
Assembly overwhelmingly approved the measure last week. A
last-minute amendment that broadens the bill's religious protections
helped win over two undecided Republicans in the Senate. Upon
hearing of the bill's passage, proponents who had lined the Senate
hallways for days began chanting, “USA! USA! USA!”
Rivera, who is currently touring in
Europe with the Glee Live Tour, tweeted to her more than
345,000 followers: “New York just made Santana a very happy woman!
So happy for the countless peoples lives this will change.”
“CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! ABOUT TIME!”
Pink added in retweeting a New York Times story on the
historic legislation's passage.
Thirty-nine-year-old Applegate, who'll
return to the small screen in NBC's fall sitcom Up All Night,
messaged her nearly 900,000 followers: “I am giddy!
Congratulations New Yorkers. This is a proud moment! The way it
should be! Love is love! Humans are humans!”
