Former New York Giants wide receiver
David Tyree will join Maggie Gallagher for a 1PM press conference at
the Capitol in Albany on Monday to discuss a gay marriage bill.
Tyree, a Super Bowl champion and
Gallagher, the board chair of the National Organization for Marriage
(NOM), the nation's most vociferous opponent of gay marriage, will
also be joined by NOM President Brian Brown and Rev. Duane Motley of
the Christian Conservative group New Yorkers for Constitutional
Freedom.
Governor Andrew Cuomo officially
introduced his gay marriage bill on Tuesday. He's since been meeting
with GOP lawmakers in the Senate, where the measure has stalled.
According
to The New York Post, a deal is near that could see at
least one undecided Republican come out for the measure. A vote
could come as early as Monday.
NOM is expected to deliver 63,000
petitions urging GOP senators to vote against the bill.
In a videotaped interview with NOM
released last week, Tyree said legalizing gay marriage in New York
would lead to anarchy.
“If they pass this gay marriage
bill,” Tyree said, “what I know will happen if this does come
forth is this will be the beginning of our country sliding toward,
you know, it's a strong word, but anarchy.” (The video is embedded
in the right panel of this page.)
NOM
has pledged $1.5 million to defeat the effort to make New York the
sixth – and most populous – state to legalize gay marriage.
