Steve Tisch, the owner of the New York
Giants, has joined the Human
Rights Campaign's (HRC) New Yorkers for Marriage Equality
campaign.
“As an owner of the New York Giants
I'm proud to join the chorus of professionals in sports working for
fairness both on and off the field,” Tisch says in his 40-second
video released Tuesday.
“All New Yorkers should be able to
marry the person they love. Please join me and a super-majority of
New Yorkers supporting marriage equality. Now is the time.” (The

Tisch is the fourth celebrity from the
world of professional sports to join the campaign. Giants
defensive end Michael Strahan, New York Rangers winger Sean Avery
and Phoenix
Suns point guard Steve Nash have previously recorded videos for
the campaign that began last year.
Avery's
endorsement created the most controversy – either because he
was the first or because of the hockey player's reputation as an
agitator on the ice – opening a previously mostly silent discussion
on homophobia in professional sports.
The prospects that New York would
become the sixth state to legalize gay marriage brightened
considerably on Monday when proponents picked up the endorsements of
four previously undecided state Senators. However, two more GOP
votes are need to win passage in the chamber.
