Comedians Chris Rock and Wanda Sykes
disagree on Tracy Morgan's right to make anti-gay jokes.
Both took to Twitter to vent on the
controversial stand-up routine Morgan delivered last weekend in
Nashville. In the routine, Morgan condoned anti-gay bullying and
said he would stab his son to death if he found out he was gay.
Rock, who is known for being
outrageous, suggested to his more than 118,000 followers that Morgan
was simply exercising free speech: “I don't know about you, but I
don't want to live in [a] world where Tracy Morgan can't say foul
inappropriate shit.”
Sykes, who is gay, disagreed, tweeting
that Morgan wouldn't attempt such a routine in Los Angeles: “I
fault the TN lawmakers. They've created an anti-gay environment.
Don't believe Tracy would be so ignorant in LA, because we have a
mayor, a city council, and police chief who believes we are all
equal.”
“I do believe in free speech, but for
a youth in TN or any other numerous place, Tracy just yelled, 'Fire,'
in a crowded theater,” she messaged.
Morgan apologized for his comedy set,
but gay
rights groups said they hoped he would do more.
