Author-activist Chaz Bono has been
named grand marshal of the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade, the San
Francisco Chronicle reported.
Bono, the child of gay icon Cher and
the late entertainer-politician Sonny Bono, is the subject of the
film Becoming Chaz, which premiered last month on nascent
cabler the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). He's also written a memoir
on the subject of his gender reassignment, Transition: The Story
of How I Became a Man.
“I am extremely pleased to have been
selected grand marshal of one of the nation's largest community pride
events,” Bono said in a statement.
Also named celebrity grand marshals are
actress Olympia Dukakis and celebrity chef Yigit Pura, star of cabler
Bravo's Top Chef: Just Desserts.
Previous celebrity
grand marshals include actress Jennifer Beals, singer Cyndi Lauper,
activist Lt. Dan Choi and actress Cloris Leachman.
The annual parade, now in its 41st
year, is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of revelers as it
winds its way down Market Street to the Civic Center, site of the
annual SF Pride Celebration, on Sunday, June 26.
