The National Organization for Marriage
(NOM) has labeled an effort to pressure Orbitz to drop Fox News as
“bullying.”
On Monday, three gay groups – GLAAD,
Equality Matters and Courage Campaign – kicked
off their Drop Fox campaign by appealing to gay-friendly travel site
Orbitz to walk away from advertising on Fox News. The groups
said the network “blatantly promotes an anti-gay political agenda.”
In
a blog entry the following day, NOM labeled the effort
“bullying.”
Equality
Matter's Carlos Maza called out the group in a post titled NOM:
You're Only A Bully If You Support Gay Rights.
“As anyone who has had the
displeasure of following NOM's work over the past several months
knows, the group clearly has a habit of tossing around accusations of
'bullying' anytime pro-LGBT groups attempt to pressure politicians or
organizations to support equal rights.”
Maza points out that NOM has done
plenty of arm twisting of its own in the past, including launching a
campaign against law firm King & Spalding for not defending the
Defense of Marriage of Act (DOMA), spending $500,000 to oust three
Iowa Supreme Court justices that favored gay marriage, and
threatening the political careers of lawmakers in New York and
Maryland if they vote in favor of legalizing gay marriage.
“When NOM spends millions of dollars
pressuring lawmakers, ousting judges, and targeting law firms in
order to deny countless LGBT Americans equal rights, they're just
doing what's right,” Maza snarked.
