Clothier J. Crew is pushing a gay
agenda by including gay models, a socially conservative group says.
The
Culture and Media Institute's Matt Philbin on Tuesday chided J.
Crew for featuring the company's gay designer Somsack with his
boyfriend Micah as models with the caption “Happy Together.”
Philbin commented on the retailer's May
catalog after ABC New reported on the company's effort to market to
the gay community.
Last month, the
group drew widespread attention for criticizing a J. Crew layout
that features photos of Jenna Lyons, creative director for J. Crew,
hanging out with her son Beckett. In one photo, Beckett is seen with
his feet in his mother's lap, his toenails painted hot pink. Under
the headline “Quality Time,” Lyons is quoted: “Lucky for me, I
ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting
is way more fun in neon.”
Philbin said the new ad only
strengthened his argument that J. Crew was pushing a gay agenda.
“So J. Crew is consciously angling
for the 'LGBT' market, but there's no agenda behind marketing
materials featuring a little boy with hot pink toenails?” he wrote.
