Minnesota Congresswoman Michele
Bachmann on Monday returned to Iowa to remind voters in that early
caucus state that she opposes gay marriage, POLITICO.com
reported.
Bachmann, who has yet to declare her
candidacy for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, continued to
court social conservatives at an event sponsored by Bob Vander
Plaats' Christian conservative group The Family Leader.
The Republican who as a state senator
twice spearheaded unsuccessful efforts in Minnesota to
constitutionally ban gay marriage railed against the institution at
the group's most recent presidential lecture series installment.
“In 5,000 years of recorded human
history … neither in the east or in the west … has any society
ever defined marriage as anything other than between men and women,”
Bachmann told attendees. “Not one in 5,000 years of recorded human
history. That's an astounding fact and it isn't until the last 12
years or so that we have seen for the first time in recorded human
history marriage defined as anything other than between men and
between women.”
Last month, Bachmann
thanked Iowa voters for ousting three state Supreme Court justices
who favored gay marriage.
