Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has recorded a PSA urging New Yorkers to support gay marriage.

“When I was mayor, I used to ask the question, 'How am I doing?'” Koch says in the 31-second ad.

“Right now, our state is not doing so well when it comes to fairness.”

“I'm former mayor Ed Koch and I'm a New Yorker who supports marriage equality,” he adds. (The video is embedded in the right panel of this page.)

Koch's ad is part of an ongoing campaign that features prominent celebrities and politicians, including Hollywood couple Ethan and Ryan Hawke, New York city Mayor Michael Bloomberg and singer-songwriter Moby. The campaign, backed by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest gay rights advocate, hopes to build momentum on the issue now, ahead of a hoped-for second attempt to legalize the institution later this year.

The campaign created a stir when it recruited Barbara Bush, the daughter of former president George W. Bush, to record a video.

Governor Andrew Cuomo recently pledged he would spearhead a new effort to legalize gay marriage in the Empire State later this year.
