Opponents of gay marriage and gay
rights will be featured at Iowa Representative Steve King's
Conservative Principles Conference, the
Iowa Independent reported.
King, an ardent opponent of gay rights,
will host the March 26 conference at the Des Moines Marriott.
“Iowans will be granted access to
some of the best, most respected conservative leaders in our nation
at my conference,” King said in a statement.
Expected to attend are four potential
GOP presidential candidates: Minnesota Congresswoman Michele
Bachmann, former
Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, Tea Party favorite Herman
Cain and former American diplomat and Fox News commentator John
Bolton.
South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint will
keynote the event. Last year, DeMint
told a group of conservatives that schools should reject gay and
lesbian teachers.
Also invited is the National
Organization for Marriage (NOM), the nation's most vociferous
opponent of gay marriage.
King joined NOM last summer in
campaigning against three of the seven Iowa Supreme Court justices
who legalized gay marriage in the state.
In
a recent interview with Political Correction, the 61-year-old
Republican crowed about taking on gay marriage supporters greeting
him on the bus tour.
“I went on the judge bus tour with
the National Organization for Marriage and the Family Research
Council, and I climbed off of that bus into the heart of the
screaming, profane gays that met us at nearly every stop, and I took
them on directly, and in some cases actually — not direct violence,
but physical,” he said.
