Rocker Adam Lambert and Glee
star Jane Lynch were among the hundreds in attendance at Sir Elton
John's concert to support gay marriage.
The
Rocket
Man
singer and new dad performed a concert on Wednesday in support of
the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), a group formed
specifically to support a challenge to California's gay marriage ban,
Proposition 8, at the Beverly Hills estate of Ron Burke. The
90-minute concert reportedly helped raise more than $3 million for
the group.
The concert marks a reversal on the
issue for Sir Elton, who
previously endorsed civil unions for gay and lesbian couples.
“This is a civil rights issue,”
Lambert told the AP at the concert. “This is beyond morality and
this and that. You know our country makes many of its other
decisions based on these ideals, and then all of the sudden when it
comes to the gay and lesbian community we're reverting back into,
'Well religion and sanctity.' You know what? Separation of church
and state – gotta keep that going.”
Lynch, who married Dr. Lara Embry in
Massachusetts, said the couple would love to be married in
California. Currently, the state recognizes gay and lesbian couples
with domestic partnerships.
“We would love to be married here in
California,” Lynch said. “We also would love for it to be
national.” (The video is embedded in the right panel of this
