Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on
Saturday messaged Lady Gaga on the demise of “Don't Ask, Don't
Tell,” the ban on gay troops serving openly in the military.
The
Senate voted in favor of ending debate on a standalone bill that
repeals the law. The final 63 to 33 tally included more
Republicans than previously expected.
“@ladygaga #DADT on it's way to
becoming history,” Reid tweeted to Gaga and his more than 15,000
followers.
The pair first exchanged messages in
September, before the Senate made its first attempt to repeal the
law.
“Gay veterans were my VMA dates,”
the gay rights supporter tweeted. “Repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell.
CALL HARRY REID to Schedule Senate Vote.”
Moments later, the Nevada senator
replied, “There is a vote on #DADT next week. Anyone qualified to
serve this country should be allowed to do so,” and directed the
singer and her followers to a press release on the subject posted on
the senator's official blog.
In a video recorded last month, the
Alejandro singer urged senators to repeal the law.
