Women making gay glossy Out's
annual list of most compelling people of 2010 include Rachel Maddow,
Chely Wright and Meredith Baxter.
Maddow is the only openly gay woman
featured on the cover.
The
magazine's 100 Most Compelling People of 2010 cover also includes
singer Ricky Martin, actress Julianne Moore, talk show host Nate
Berkus, and figure skater Johnny Weir.
The glossy crowned Maddow Newsmaker of
the Year.
In her profile, Maddow, the
much-loved host of MSNBC's The
Rachel Maddow Show, says she's frustrated with Democrats who
pander to the gay community.
“We continue to have a sort of
lackadaisical gay political movement that has a relationship with
Democrat politicians that doesn't serve gay rights: 'We want to be
close to you.' Beautiful! But if we're not getting anything for
that, then it's actually counterproductive,” she said.
Other openly gay women in the issue
include country music star Chely Wright, actress Meredith Baxter,
Hood author Emma Donoghue, “Don't Ask, Don't Tell”
activist Katie Miller, director Lisa Cholodenko and Bishop Mary
Glasspool, the first openly lesbian bishop in the Episcopal Church.
Wright
came out lesbian in a May interview with celebrity glossy People.
“Nothing in my
life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out,”
she said.
Sixty-three-year-old
Baxter said in July that she considered coming out gay in an ad.
“I was sort of
entertaining the idea,” the Family Ties mother said. “I
thought I might put an ad in the paper, kind of like a little birth
announcement that would say, 'OK, I'm gay – Meredith.'”
The
first openly lesbian bishop in the Episcopal Church, Mary Glasspool,
follows in the footsteps of New Hampshire Bishop Gene V. Robinson,
the church's first openly gay bishop. Robinson
recently announced he'll retire in 2013.
