Fort Worth Councilman Joel Burns and
country music star Chely Wright appear in new PSA's for GLSEN.
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education
Network (GLSEN), which works to combat anti-gay behavior and bias in
schools, recruited the gay celebrities to help pitch its Safe Space
Campaign, which aims to place a GLSEN Safe Space Kit in every middle
and high school in the country.
Burns, the
openly gay councilman whose video of a recent speech on gay teens
bullied to death at a city council meeting has gone viral on the
Internet, says, “Every kid deserves a safe space in school,”
in his video.
“When LGBT students know that they
have somebody to turn to, they are less likely to skip school, they
are able to learn and they won't give up,” Wright, who
came out lesbian in an interview with People magazine in May,
says in her video. (The video is embedded in the right panel of this
page.)
Wright's eighth studio album, Lifted
Off The Ground, and a memoir titled Like Me
coincided with her coming out.
