Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss fired
an aide on Thursday over an anti-gay comment, POLITICO.com reported.
The aide, whose name was not made
public, is accused of commenting “All faggots must die” in a post
about the Senate's failure to break a Republican filibuster on repeal
of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” the 1993 law that bans gay troops
from serving openly, on Joseph
Jervis' popular gay blog Joe.My.God.
Senate Sergeant at Arms Terry Gainer
investigated the incident at Jervis' request. Jervis discovered the
comment originated near Chambliss' office in Atlanta by tracking the
IP address of the comment's owner, a user named “Jimmy.”
Chambliss called the comment
“unacceptable” and apologized to Jervis.
“I have called Mr. Jervis, the blog's
author, and apologized to him personally, and I am sorry for the hurt
this incident has caused,” Chambliss, a Republican opposed to gay
rights, said. “Regardless of one's position on issues and
policies, such comments are simply unacceptable, are not befitting
those who work in the U.S. Senate, and I will not tolerate them from
my staff.”
