In the Future has won the fourth annual Queer Lion prize at the 67th Venice Film Festival.

The three-person jury announced the winner Thursday.

Argentine director Mauro Andrizzi's En El Futuro (In The Future) was selected “For portraying and displaying, in short episodes, spontaneous and solid love, regardless of it being part of a straight or gay love story,” the jury said of the 63-minute film shot entirely in black and white.

The movie beat out six other titles, including Darren Aronofsky's much heralded thriller Black Swan, which opened the festival. The film, and its star, Natalie Portman (Star Wars), who plays a lesbian ballerina, have already attracted a cheering section for this year's Oscar race.

Also in competition was Director Daniele Segre's Lisetta Carmi, Un'animo in Cammino, a film about the world of transvestites in Genoa; Tom Tykwer's love triangle flick Three; Potiche, which stars Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu, from openly gay director Francois Ozon; Antony Cordier's bisexual couple swapping film Happy Few; and Et in Terra Pax from filmmakers Matteo Botrugno and Daniele Coluccini.

Fashion designer turned film director Tom Ford won last year's prize with his big screen adaption of Christopher Isherwood's 1964 novel A Single Man. A Single Man went on to win numerous additional prizes, but failed to receive a best picture Oscar nomination.
