Two men allege they were beaten by a
gang of teenagers outside a Stapleton, New York White Castle, the New
York Daily News reported.
The New York Police Department Hate
Crimes Task Force is investigating the claim by married gay couple
Luis Viera, 47, and Richard Vieira, 39. The men say they were
attacked at the fast food restaurant on Wednesday about 2:30AM.
Three teens allegedly approached the
couple as they sat to eat. One asked, “What the fuck are you
looking at fag?” recalled Richard. A few moments later, one of the
teens hit Luis in the back of the head.
When the pair followed the teens
outside into the parking lot, they found themselves surrounded by a
gang of more than a dozen Black youths, both male and female.
The teens knocked Richard to the
ground, but Luis made it back inside the restaurant and called for
help.
“I was left unconscious,” Richard
said.
Richard was rushed to Richmond
University Medical Center for treatment.
The men claim they were targeted
because they are gay. Luis says he was wearing an armband with a
rainbow flag, a symbol of gay pride. The NYPD has confirmed the
incident is being investigated as a hate crime.
The Daily
News reporting that the number of bias attacks on Staten
Island has surged over 80 percent from the same time period last
year.
