Glee creator Ryan Murphy and
Mark Ruffalo – star of the
gay parenting flick The Kids Are Alright – will team up
in the upcoming big screen adaption of the AIDS drama The Normal
Heart.
The movie is based on the
semi-autobiographical Larry Kramer play by the same name. The play's
1985 premiere was critically acclaimed. Kramer has signed on to
write the screenplay.
“I just signed on tentatively with
Ryan Murphy to do The Normal Heart, which is the Larry Kramer
play,” Ruffalo
told MTV News. “It's really powerful and strong and
beautiful.”
Ruffalo will play the lead character of
Ned Weeks, a gay writer-AIDS activist who founds an advocacy group in
New York City during the early years of the AIDS pandemic. Ned's
confrontational style thrusts the unprepared group into the media
spotlight.
“It's a juicy part,” the
42-year-old actor added. “It's just a great role, man. He's a
fighter, you know?”
Murphy's capacity in the project has
not been announced.
