Cindy and Meghan McCain have posed in
ads for the anti-Proposition 8 campaign No
H8.
Images of Cindy McCain, the wife of
2008 Republican presidential nominee Arizona Senator John McCain, and
their daughter Meghan, a pro-gay Republican, appeared on the group's
website on Wednesday.
The No H8 Campaign opposes Proposition
8, the 2008 California voter-approved gay marriage ban that trumped a
state Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage in the state.
Both women were photographed with their
mouths duct taped and “NOH8” written on one cheek.
Cindy McCain contacted the group to
offer her endorsement, the group said in a release.
“The McCains are one of the most
well-known Republican families in recent history, and for Mrs. McCain
to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot.”
Megan McCain said she was “proud”
of her mother in a Twitter message. “I think more Republicans need
to start taking a stand for equality,” she said.
Senator McCain, who endorsed a 2008
Arizona ballot initiative that banned gay marriage in the state, said
he respected the views of members of his family but remained opposed
to gay marriage.
“Sen. McCain believes the sanctity of
marriage is only defined as between one man and one woman,”
McCain's office said in a statement.
