Thomas Beatie, the world's first
transgender man to give birth, delivered his second child Tuesday, a
baby boy, ABC reported. Beatie and wife, Nancy, have not yet named
the newborn.
Beatie's spring announcement last year
that he was pregnant in gay monthly The Advocate drew
controversy and stirred emotions about Beatie's claimed masculinity.
He defended his right to have a child on The Oprah Winfrey Show
saying: “I
feel it's not a male or female desire to have a child. It's a human
need. I'm a person and I have the right to have a biological child.”
Daughter Susan, conceived through artificial insemination,
was born on June 29 in an Oregon hospital.
Thomas Beatie, 35, had sex reassignment
surgery in 2002, but opted to retain his reproductive sexual
organs. He then legally changed his birth certificate from Tracy to
Thomas and married Nancy, a mother of two divorcee, in 2003. The
couple decided he should get pregnant after learning that Nancy was
unable to bear another child due to a hysterectomy. After nine
doctors refused to participate in the pregnancy of a transgender man,
the Beaties resorted to a home procedure of sperm purchased on the
Internet delivered through a syringe to conceive Susan.
In November, Beatie told ABC's Barbara
Walters that he was pregnant with his second child.
ABC now reports that Nancy, 46, will
also breastfeed their son, as she did with Susan.
