Vice presidential hopeful Senator Joe
Biden appeared Monday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he
told chat show host Ellen DeGeneres that California's proposed gay
marriage ban is “regressive” and that he would vote against it.
Biden congratulated Ellen on her recent
marriage to actress Portia de Rossi and then spoke about Prop. 8.
“If I lived in California, I'd
totally vote against Prop. 8,” the Delaware Senator said. “And,
by the way, Barack and I opposed a similar attempt nationally. There
was an attempt to talk about a constitutional amendment which I think
is regressive, I think it's unfair. So, I vote no.”
“No on Prop. 8!” DeGeneres
responded. “Fantastic! That's what I wanted to hear.”
In the last several weeks, DeGeneres
has increased her vocal opposition to the gay marriage ban. Last
week she announced she would spend $100,000 of her own money to buy
TV airtime to promote her own commercial against the gay marriage
ban.
Openly gay DeGeneres married her
longtime girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi (Nip/Tuck), in
September. Her marriage is one of thousands in California that might
be voided should the gay marriage ban pass.
Both Senator Biden and Senator Barack
Obama have said they do not support gay marriage, opting instead for
civil unions for gay couples, but both have expressed their
opposition to constitutional gay marriage bans.
