Former Vice President Dick Cheney and
political commentator Liz Cheney said Wednesday that Kentucky clerk
Kim Davis has an obligation to serve gay couples.
Davis is facing contempt charges for
defying a court ruling ordering her to issue marriage licenses to all
qualified couples. On Tuesday, she turned away at least four gay
couples despite having exhausted all her legal options.

During an appearance with his daughter
on the conservative outlet Newsmax, Dick Cheney said that it
was “clear” to him that Davis had no choice but to comply with
the order.
“It's the law of the land and as a
general proposition, it seems to me you've got to go forward with
it,” he said.
Liz Cheney disagreed with host Steve
Malzberg's suggestion that forcing Davis to issue marriage licenses
to gay couples was a “step” toward forcing churches and
synagogues to wed same-sex couples.
“As my dad said, it is the law of the
land,” she said. “The court has ruled. And she's not an
employee of a church or synagogue. She's a government employee. So,
she has an obligation to uphold the law.” (The video is embedded

During her failed Senate run last year,
the younger Cheney feuded with her sister, Mary Cheney, who is gay
and married, after she came out against marriage equality.
