A Congressional Democrat from Illinois
gave his support last year to a bill which seeks to abolish marriage
rights for gay and lesbian couples with an amendment to the U.S.
Constitution that defines marriage as a heterosexual union.
Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp, a
Republican, introduced the measure in 2013, after the Supreme Court
struck down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),
which led to the federal government's recognition of same-sex
marriages.
Illinois Rep. Dan Lipinski indicates
his support for the measure in a questionnaire from the conservative
Illinois Family Institute.
According to the Washington Blade,
Lipinski appears to be the only sitting Congressional Democrat to
back such a measure.
He also told the Illinois Family
institute that he's opposed to passage of the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), an LGBT protections bill.
When asked whether Lipinski still holds
the views he expressed in the questionnaire, a spokesman did not have
an immediate comment and told the Blade that it was free to
publish the information.
