Puerto Rico Secretary of Housing
Alberto Lastra Power has announced that he's gay and has recently married
his partner of 18 years, making him the government's first openly gay
cabinet member.
He told recent graduates in a tweet
that he has overcome the prejudice he's faced as a gay man.
“The prejudice that I have lived as a
gay man I have overcome. You too can beat discrimination,” he
messaged.
Dozens of followers on Twitter
congratulated Lasta Power, including out singer Ricky Martin, the
island's best known export.
“Congratulations,” Martin messaged.
“A full life. That is the true meaning of success. Peace!”
After a couple weeks of foot-dragging,
Puerto Rico started issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian
couples last month in response to the Supreme Court's ruling striking
down gay marriage bans in all 50 states.
