Brian Brown, the president of the
National Organization for Marriage (NOM), on Saturday compared
allowing gay couples to marry to slavery.
NOM is the nation's largest group
devoted to reversing the Supreme Court's decision striking down bans
on gay marriage in all 50 states.
The group gained momentum when it
successfully campaigned for a constitutional amendment banning such
unions in California. Proposition 8 became unenforceable after it
was declared unconstitutional in 2013.
All along Brown has attempted to paint
opponents as victims.
He returned to this theme while
speaking to an audience at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames,
Iowa, where he told social conservatives who had gathered to hear
from 10 Republican presidential candidates that he would not give up
the fight.
“Did Frederick Douglass give up when
he was fighting against slavery?” Brown rhetorically asked, a
reference to the African-American abolitionist.
