A large share of Republicans are
refusing to accept a Supreme Court ruling striking down gay marriage
bans in all 50 states.
According to a USA
TODAY/Suffolk University telephone poll of 1,000 adults conducted
July 9-12, 49 percent of Republicans say the issue is not settled and
want local officials to take steps to block gay couples from
marrying.
Overall, a majority (51%) of Americans
say local and state officials should allow gay couples to marry even
if they oppose such unions. Thirty-eight percent of Republicans also
agree.
Gay couples have faced pockets of
resistance in the 13 states affected by the ruling. A Kentucky clerk
who has vowed never to issue marriage licenses to gay couples is
facing a lawsuit.

Four in 10 respondents said that the
issue will have no impact on who they vote for next year for
president.
