Republican presidential candidate Chris
Christie on Sunday said that the type of judges he nominated to the
New Jersey Supreme Court would not have struck down state bans on gay
marriage.
Christie, the current governor of New
Jersey, made his comments during an appearance on Fox News Sunday.
“If the Christie-type justices had
been on that court in the majority, we would have won those cases in
the Supreme Court, rather than lost them,” he said, a reference to
recent rulings upholding a key provision of the Affordable Care Act
(ACA) and a finding that gay couples have a constitutional right to
marry in all 50 states.
Christie said that he was proud of the
conservative judges he appointed to the New Jersey Supreme Court,
knocking down criticism of his reappointment of New Jersey Supreme
Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner, considered a liberal judge.
In 2012, Christie vetoed a bill
approved by lawmakers that sought to allow gay couples to marry in
the state. The following year, the state's highest court struck down
the state's ban.
