Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's
response to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling striking down state bans
on gay marriage included a sarcastic proposal for President Barack
Obama.
The 91-year-old dictator is a vocal
opponent of gay rights.
“I've just concluded since President
Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people and
enjoys an attractive countenance thus if it becomes necessary, I
shall travel to Washington DC, get down on my knee, and ask his
hand,” Mugabe is quoted by Newsweek
as saying during his weekly radio interview.
He went on to condemn the court's
decision.
“I can't understand how this people
dare to defy Christ's explicit orders as our Lord prohibited mankind
from sodomy.”
“Washington,” he added, was being
controlled by “perverted Satan-worshippers who insult the great
American nation.”
Last year, Mugabe
threatened to “chop off” the heads of gay men who cannot
reproduce.
