Actress Tatiana Maslany became visibly
emotional in a recent interview when asked to explain why she's an
ally to the LGBT community.
Maslany stars in the Canadian science
fiction television series Orphan Black, which follows a woman
who assumes the identity of one of her clones, raising issues about
human cloning as it relates to personal identity.
The series was recently renewed for a
fourth season to air next year.
In speaking with GLAAD, Maslany was
asked why the show has such a large LGBT following.
“We offer good representation in
terms of complex characters that aren't defined necessarily just by
their sexuality but by every facet of what it is to be a person,”
she answered.
“And why are you an ally to the LGBT
community?”
“It's like a no-brainer,” Maslany
answered before becoming visibly emotional.
“A lot of my friends have struggled
with coming out or with identifying how they identify. It just makes
no sense that there wouldn't be support for the community. That it
even has to be a separate community,” she answered. (The video is
