A poll released Tuesday found record
high support for same-sex marriage.
According to a
Gallup telephone poll of 1,024 adults conducted May 6-10, 60
percent of Americans support allowing gay and lesbian couples to
marry, while 37 percent remain opposed.
Support increased 5 percent from last
year and is the highest Gallup has recorded since it first asked the
question in 1996.
Support has reached new highs among
Americans of all political backgrounds, with Democrats at 76% support
(up 2% from last year), independents at 64% (up 6%) and Republicans
at 37% (up 7%).
This is the second recent poll to
report support above sixty percent. A Washington Post/ABC
News poll conducted in April found support at 61 percent.
The findings come as the Supreme Court
considers the constitutionality of restrictive marriage bans in four
states.
