A Catholic priest who ministered to
Seton Hall University sports teams says his public support for gay
rights got him fired.
“I've been fired from SHU for posting
a pic on FB supporting LGBT 'NO H8'. I'm sorry it was met with this
response. I'll miss my work here,” the Rev. Warren Hall tweeted on
Friday.
Hall has since removed the tweet.
Seton Hall is run by the Archdiocese of
Newark, New Jersey.
Laurie A. Pine, a spokeswoman for Seton
Hall, said in a statement that the university “does not comment on
personnel matters.”
“The Archbishop of Newark appoints
the Director of Campus Ministry, who serves at his discretion,” she
said.
A
Change.org petition asking the Archdiocese of Newark John J.
Myers to reinstate Hall was started by a Seton Hall student.
“This action is neither in line with
the teachings of Jesus Christ, nor is it [in] line with the words of
Pope Francis, current leader of the Roman Catholic Church,” Ethan
Kraft's petition reads.
More than 4,400 people have signed the
petition as of Tuesday morning.
