Republican Ohio Governor John Kasich
said Sunday that not only would he attend the same-sex wedding of a
loved one, he's already accepted such an invitation.
In a wide-ranging CNN
interview, Kasich, a possible candidate for the Republican
presidential nomination, was asked whether he would attend the
same-sex wedding of a loved one, despite his opposition to marriage
equality.
“Sure,” he answered.
Kasich said that after consulting with
his wife, he agreed to attend the upcoming wedding of a gay friend.
“Just because you're opposed to
something doesn't mean you don't care about your friends, other human
beings,” he answered.
“My friend knows how I feel about the
issue, but I'm not here to have a war with him. I care about my
friend, so it's pretty simple for me. I don't want to be making big
statements about any of this.”
Other Republicans are being asked the
same question. Florida Senator Marco
Rubio was in agreement with Kasich, while former Pennsylvania
Senator Rick
Santorum said that attending such a ceremony would be a “violation
of his faith.” Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker said Saturday
that he has attended the wedding reception of a gay relative.
