Jonathan Groff, star of the HBO series
Looking, says that he feels sad that there will not be a third
season of the gay comedy-drama.
The show, which wrapped up its second
season on March 22, followed the lives of three gay men living in San
Francisco: Patrick (played by
Groff), who came to the city to find love, Dom (Murray Bartlett), a
waiter looking to fulfill his father's dream of owning a successful
restaurant, and Agustin (Frankie J. Alvarez), who struggled with his
art and relationships.
Despite
an enthusiastic fan base, Looking
was not a ratings hit.
“We wanted to create a show with gay
men where they weren't tragic figures or the comedic relief or
sexually sensationalized but just multi-dimensional human beings,”
Groff told PEOPLE.
“So, I feel sad that it was canceled but grateful for the time
that we had.”
Word of the show's end sparked an
outpouring of support, which Groff said “speaks to just the need
and desire for more gay stories to be told.”
“Hopefully, it maybe paved the way
for other people to create [more] gay stories. Hopefully, someday
there won't be just one gay show on the air but multiple shows,” he
added.
Producers have promised a special to
end the series.
