Comedian Wanda Sykes says she was treated like a unicorn after coming out gay.

The 50-year-old Sykes came out gay in 2008 during a rally to protest passage of California's gay marriage ban, Proposition 8, which fell in 2013.

Appearing on The Meredith Vieira Show, Sykes told host Meredith Vieira that her coming out was not planned.

“It just came out,” Sykes said, “because I'd just gotten married, so instead of speaking as a supporter, I was, you know, speaking as one of the, I guess, victims. It just happened.”

“But was the fallout positive after that?”

“Yeah. Funny though, because like being [an] African-American celebrity who's out, they started treating me like a unicorn. We've never seen one of you before! I guess me and RuPaul, that's it,” Sykes joked. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)
