Alabama State Senator Del Marsh, a
Republican, recently voiced his concern about the high cost of
allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry.
Barring intervention from an appeals
court or the Supreme Court, a federal judge's rulings striking down
Alabama's ban on gay marriage will take effect on Monday, February 9,
making Alabama the 37th state, plus the District of
Columbia, where gay couples can marry.
During
a radio appearance, Marsh suggested that its legalization could
become a financial burden.
“You gotta look at the financial
aspect of it,” Marsh said during an appearance on WVNN in Athens.
“Let's face it. If gay marriage is approved, I assume that those
types of unions, those people would be entitled to Social Security
benefits, insurance. Where does it end?”
“I wonder if the federal government
is looking at the actual cost to the government when they look at an
issue like this,” he added.
