Michael Sam on Friday confirmed that he and boyfriend Vito Cammisano got engaged while on a European vacation.

Sam, 25, tweeted a photo of himself on one knee proposing marriage to Cammisano.

“@Vitcamm Thank you for saying yes,” he captioned the photo followed by three engagement ring emoticons.

According to TMZ.com, which first broke the story last week, Sam and Vito were inside St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City at the time of the proposal. It was unclear whether Sam was attempting to send a message to the Catholic Church, which does not support marriage equality.

In the recent OWN documentary Michael Sam, Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL, discussed meeting Cammisano at the University of Missouri.
