The nation's most vociferous opponent
of marriage equality ended 2013 millions in debt.
According to an analysis of the
National Organization for Marriage's (NOM) 2013 tax filings done by
the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest LGBT rights
advocate, NOM raised $5.1 million last year, a drop of over 50
percent since 2012. Over half of the organization's funding came
from just 2 donors. And NOM ended 2013 more than $2.5 million in
debt.
“NOM should start figuring out that
people aren't willing to give their hard-earned money to an extremist
agenda that's going nowhere,” said
Fred Sainz, vice president of communications at HRC. “If I
were [NOM President] Brian Brown, I'd be worried that my two or three
mega-donors are soon going to come to terms with the fact that they'd
largely be better off flushing money down the toilet.”
“Americans certainly aren't buying
what NOM is selling,” Sainz added, “and it's only a matter of
time before the trickle of money keeping the lights on at NOM HQ
dries up.”
As president of Rights Equal Rights,
Fred Karger has pursued NOM in various states, filing charges of
campaign violations.
“The NOM ship is sinking and going
down fast,” Karger said in an emailed statement. “Under Brian
Brown's leadership, the funding to NOM's 501(c)4 political operation
was down 50% in 2013 and 70% to its 501(c)3 charitable arm. It's
relying on just two donors now for most of its revenue.”
