CBS' gay-inclusive comedy The
McCarthys premiered Thursday to sluggish ratings.
The McCarthys revolves around a
close-knit sports-crazed Boston family. In the pilot, openly gay
Ronny (played by Tyler Ritter) attempts to spend less time with his
family in order to improve his dating life.
Despite an enviable time slot following
the season premiere of Two And A Half Men, the sitcom under
performed.
“The McCarthys debuted with an
underwhelming by CBS comedy standards 1.9 rating in the 18-49,”
Deadline Hollywood reported. “That is believed to be the
lowest-rated in-season comedy premiere in the network's history, a
tenth below CBS' previous lowest-rated comedy debut, We are Men
(2.0) last fall.”
In reviewing the comedy, Deadline
Hollywood's Dominic Patten called the show stale – “The
McCarthys is a show that could have debuted almost any time in
the last ten years. And I don't mean that in the best way. The
characters are stock, the comedy broad, the gay and lesbian jokes
homely.” – but added that the comedy shows potential for being a
“solid scorer” for CBS on Thursday.
